War Child

In my research I can’t help but notice the child element during the Civil War.  Some scholars have even referred to the Civil War as the war “fought by boys.”
One of the stories involving “boys as soldiers” took place at the Battle of Shiloh.  The story goes that during the chaos a drummer boy picked up a rifle, then shot and killed a Colonel.  Apparently this was the first recorded incidence of a child behaving as a soldier.  Throughout the conflict there would be other situations in which boys would have to “kill or be killed”.

The Laundress

One of the great things about working on my projects is that I get to meet some fascinating people along the way.  I enjoy hearing other people’s stories - like why they do what they do, for example.  But best of all is finding those genuine souls who, though our time together is often short, have made my life better by our paths having crossed.

The Reasons

Years ago I stumbled upon a battle reenactment about the Civil War.  I was curious and moved by the dedicated people I met that day who spend their time and money in order to bring history to life.  It planted a seed within me to also share stories about the Civil War using my own artistic abilities.

Now, after many years, I am pursuing this desire.  So I’m picking up my camera and headed out to join the ranks of the determined in the quest to keep history alive.  This blog is about my journey along the way.

My gratitude and appreciation to all the men, women and children re-enactors who have made this project possible.
